Responsibilities
Interprets field examination data and makes preliminary treatment recommendations for harvest, post harvest and timber stand improvement projects.
Participates in area interdisciplinary team meetings, and develops silvicultural prescriptions incorporating team recommendations.
Analyzes issues and concerns for the Managers and Solicitors, compiling and drafting documents on responses, conclusions and recommendations for litigation, protests and appeals.
Investigates and initiates trespass reports of unauthorized use and recommends resolution actions.
Drafts public and press releases on forestry program activities, conducts and/or leads meeting/open houses on proposals for public review of projects for National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) compliance with interest groups and other agencies.
Adapts and develops contract stipulations and exhibits to meet BLM objectives or reduce environmental impacts.
Collects & interprets data during field examination and updates inventory to make preliminary treatment recommendations.

The physical demands of this position are divided between and office environment and moderate to heavy physical activity in the field. The ability to safely operate four-wheel drive vehicles, ATV's and snow machines is necessary. The ability to walk over steep, rough, uneven or rocky terrain at extreme elevations and hiking through dense brush, logging slash and tree covered terrain in multiple weather conditions is required.
Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement:
1. Degree: forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas:
Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Examples of creditable courses in this area include silviculture, forest management operations, timber management, wildland fire science or fire management, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, recreational land management, watershed management, and wildlife or range habitat management.
Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Examples of creditable courses in this area include dendrology, forest ecology, silvics, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, forest soils, forest entomology, and forest pathology.
Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. Examples of creditable courses include forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, renewable natural resources inventories and analysis, and photogrammetry or remote sensing.

2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in #1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized Experience Requirements:
In addition to the basic education requirement, in order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.
For GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-07 in the federal service. Examples include, but are not limited to: experience at the advanced trainee level. Assignments should show the application of forestry concepts that regularized analysis and evaluation of alternatives for such activities as managing forests/woodlands with emphasis on the activities for maintaining healthy, productive and resilient ecosystems.
For GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-09 in the federal service. Examples include, but are not limited to: professional knowledge of established methods & techniques of the science of forestry which would enable the forester to perform recurring assignments of moderate difficulty, i.e., the methods & techniques are well established, apply to most situations encountered, and do not require significant deviation from the established methods.
Substitution of Education for the Specialized Experience Requirement:
For GS-09: 2 years (36 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
For GS-11: 3 years (54 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
Education and experience may be combined to meet the specialized experience requirement.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
